Lookout launches mobile module to detect AI-powered text and voice scams

Mobile security vendor Lookout Inc. has launched Social Engineering Protection, a module that scans text messages and phone calls for signs an employee is being manipulated into handing over credentials or money. The company argues that email security tools and awareness training were never built for channels such as SMS, voice calls and messaging apps, where corporate inspection tools have little reach and generative AI has made personalised lures cheap to produce.

The product has three components. Smishing protection reads incoming text and multimedia messages on iOS and Android, including Rich Communication Services, and flags malicious links while also weighing the intent behind a message that carries no link. Voice coverage transcribes live calls and voicemail to surface scam patterns and checks the voice itself for signs of cloning or machine generation. A third component assesses mobile identity signals and phone number attributes to separate legitimate callers from suspicious ones, with administrators able to block numbers across a workforce from a single console.

Praveen Mamnani, chief product officer at Lookout, said frontier AI has changed the economics of cyber offence, making sophisticated social engineering accessible to mainstream attackers. The launch becomes the third pillar of Lookout’s Mobile AI Security Platform, following AI Visibility and Governance in April and the Mobile Software Exposure Center in July. It is sold as a native add-on that existing customers can enable from their admin console without deploying a new agent or infrastructure.
